EXCELLENCE IN CONSTRUCTION AWARDS
Associated Builders and Contractors of Western Washington's Excellence in Construction Awards program is designed to publicly recognize the quality and innovation of merit shop construction and to promote ABC's belief that a construction project where the choice of contractor and subcontractor is based on price, ability and performance - without regard to labor affiliation - produces the highest quality and most cost-effective project. The award honors all members of the team responsible for the award-winning project, from contractors, subcontractors and suppliers, to owners and architects. By focusing on the highest quality and innovation in merit shop construction, ABC calls attention to the "best of the best" and continues to raise standards throughout the construction industry. Stay tuned for next year's submission dates!

How does Judging work?
The award submissions are reviewed by a panel of distinguished judges. The judges will represent a cross-section of the industry, including architects, local construction press, and other construction industry experts. Criteria considered during the judging included such factors as complexity, attractiveness, unusual challenges or problems overcome, innovative techniques or programs, and safety record. ABC Honors Projects at ABC's 2010 Excellence in Construction Showcase

April 28th was the night ABC of Western Washington celebrated the “best of the best” in the merit shop construction industry, awarding 11 Excellence in Construction Awards to deserving project teams. The revamped Awards Showcase took place at the Spirit of Washington Event Center and was a huge hit with those in attendance. Everyone mingled, snacked on appetizers and learned about the different projects from the winning teams themselves in a tradeshow-like format.

People really enjoyed having the opportunity to speak face-to-face with each other, while looking at the project photos and binders. The honorable mention projects were also highlighted in the center of the room, and garnered nearly as much attention as the winners. After the opening reception and showcase, guests were seated and enjoyed dinner before each of the winning teams were brought up on stage to be recognized and receive their trophy.

The winning projects were selected by a panel of distinguished judges. They spent hours poring over each entry, then deliberated which projects rose above the rest. The judges were: Jay Janette, AIA, LEED AP, Principal, Mithun; Benjamin Minnick, Construction Editor, Daily Journal of Commerce; Scott Rhodes, NCARB, Rhodes Architecture; John Schaufelberger, Ph.D., P.E., Chairman of the Department of Construction Management, University of Washington; Max Steele, AIA, Senior Design Architect, CollinsWoerman; and Jon Taylor, AIA, Senior Designer, Collins Woerman.
