With everyone stretched so thin these days, it isn’t easy to keep up volunteer commitments, but Dawn Lanz with McMullen Electric, Inc. does it in spades. Dawn is a member of the Board of Directors, sits on the Development & Education Council, sits on the Retro Committee and chairs the Safety Committee. She is also conscientious about arriving early and always being prepared. In addition, she attends nearly every membership meeting, special event, and of course, the golf tournament.
Dawn is a very strong advocate for ABC and is always sharing with non-member companies the advantages of membership.
Her company, McMullen Electric, Inc., was one of the first to re-apply for the 2010 ABC Safety Alliance. Under Dawn’s leadership as safety officer for McMullen Electric, Inc. they have received four Platinum and six Gold STEP certificates since 2001.

What do you need to know before purchasing after-market equipment for your company’s fleet?
Answer:A little prep work will go a long way when upfitting your vehicle. If you take the time to address your needs ahead of time, you will create a more efficient vehicle, incur less down time, save on repairs, and reduce your overall liability exposure while putting a safer more productive vehicle on the road.
Proper upfitting depends on closely examining your payload, annual mileage and lifecycle. Some additional tips include:
- Properly securing the load on your vehicle will reduce the potential for vehicle rollover.
- If your needs require towing, make sure the vehicle has the capacity to tow the maximum weight you plan to tow and that the proper towing equipment is installed. A good rule of thumb is when the max trailer weight exceeds 40 percent of the total weight of the towing vehicle, an electric brake control should be used.
- Power Take Off applications (PTO) should be considered carefully. Make sure the vehicle PTO has the torque rating needed along with the proper RPMs at the right time.
- Increase in manufacturer restrictions has made Pickup Box Removal increasingly more difficult. In some instances the AME being installed is limited to a maximum weight that will only allow for a body and bumper, not leaving any additional capacity to install a hitch or ladder rack.
- Ramps, lift gates, cranes and winches are examples of additional equipment that can be included in the AME upfit.
