ABC’s September Dinner Speaker Will Inspire

ABC’s presenter for the September 22nd Dinner Meeting: Overcoming Life’s Challenges is adventurer, author and photographer Helen Thayer. Helen was named by National Geographic as one of the great explorers of the 20th century, was the first woman to trek solo to the Magnetic North Pole, across both the Sahara and Gobi deserts and to kayak 1200 miles of remote Amazon Rivers. She has spoken to over a million people around the world about what her adventures taught her – and she is going to share those lessons with us, as well as her breathtaking photography from the four corners of the earth. Her presentations are described as dynamic and enthusiastic, yet humble and down to earth, with a good dose of humor. Click here for full story.

Retrospective Rating Corner: Lag Days - What are They, and Why are They Important?
By Greg Kabacy, Employer Resources Northwest

Reporting workers' compensation claims promptly may not always be on the top of an employer’s list of things to do, but when you consider the financial implications of late reporting, it should raise a few eyebrows.

Lag days are the amount of time between when an injury occurs and when it is reported to the employer. In the ABC Retro Program, Employer Resources Northwest (ERNW) tracks the amount of time it takes between the Date of Injury (DOI) and when that injury is reported to ERNW. This may seem inconsequential, but studies have shown that when injuries are reported in a quick manner, the costs of the resulting claims are significantly lower than those that are not reported timely. Click here for full story.

Green Bites: Recycling Means Big Business for Construction Industry
By David Bahrenburg, IESI Missouri

Through all phases of a construction project, especially building, you generate waste. Tons of it ends up in landfills but it could help fill your wallet instead. During this time when every penny counts, increasing numbers of contractors and builders are looking for ways to improve construction site best practices for increased efficiency.
