Retrospective Rating Corner: Lag Days - What are They, and Why are They Important?Meet the New MembersABC Aids NAIOP Community Project Again This YearThanks for Another Successful Golf Extravaganza!August Volunteers of the MonthVolunteer of the Month for September
Reporting workers' compensation claims promptly may not always be on the top of an employer’s list of things to do, but when you consider the financial implications of late reporting, it should raise a few eyebrows.
Lag days are the amount of time between when an injury occurs and when it is reported to the employer. In the ABC Retro Program, Employer Resources Northwest (ERNW) tracks the amount of time it takes between the Date of Injury (DOI) and when that injury is reported to ERNW. This may seem inconsequential, but studies have shown that when injuries are reported in a quick manner, the costs of the resulting claims are significantly lower than those that are not reported timely. The Hartford Financial Services Group conducted a study that showed the following:
- Prompt reporting could reduce workers’ comp costs by as much as 47%
- Back injuries can become 35% more expensive if not reported within in the first week.
- Injuries reported in the 4th or 5th week following the actual incident are 45% more expensive than the same types of injuries that are reported in the first week.
Based on these three statistics alone you can see that the eventual cost of a claim can be highly influenced by how quickly it is reported. Reporting of claims within the first 48 hours allows both the employer and ERNW to act aggressively in obtaining medical information, and executing a return to work program for the injured worker that will limit time away from work.
In ABC’s Retro program, keeping costs to a minimum is crucial as those costs are often “developed” at two to three times their actual costs. Limiting lag days will decrease your costs, thus making ABC’s Retro program stronger and more beneficial to all of the members. If you have questions about how to limit your lag days, please contact ERNW at (800) 433-7601.

Once again this year ABC/WW members and staff will be helping NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association, on its Community Enhancement project. This year’s project is renovation of the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center located in Seattle’s Discovery Park. More than 400 volunteers from ABC members, NAIOP members and the community will spend Saturday, September 25th making major renovations to the 33-year old Native American-architecture building and the 20 surrounding acres. An outdoor sweat lodge blanket shelter will be constructed and the Serpent Mound and Pond restored, along with many other projects of varying scope and size.
ABC is in charge of volunteer services (registration, dispatch, food and beverage) for the day, as well as ABC painting subs overseeing the significant amount of cleaning, painting and staining needed to bring this unique building back to its original glory.
ABC members are urged to put September 25 on your calendars and spend the day giving back. This is the perfect event for office and crew team-building and is also a family friendly event. Little ones are kept busy doing crafts in a safe area, but school age kids work alongside their parents in appropriate tasks. This also qualifies for school community service credit. Please contact Kathleen Garrity if you would like more information. See you there!

Members couldn’t have asked for better weather while teeing off at ABC’s 2010 Golf Extravaganza at The Golf Club at Echo Falls in Snohomish. Everyone had a great time networking with players and sponsors. The event was a huge success due to the generous support of the membership to ABC’s community service partner the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Alaska, Montana, Northern Idaho & Washington, raising $2,221.00 on their behalf. $905 of the donation came from the winners themselves. Other proceeds made go toward raising money for ABC’s many activities supporting the construction industry - management and supervisory education, safety training, legislative representation, legal assistance, networking and improving all member services.
The backbone of what makes this event go from good to great is ABC’s Golf Committee who help plan six months out of the year for this special day. Please help us thank Chair Ken Hill (KM Electric, Inc. ), Ben Belur (Capital Benefit Services, Inc.), Eldon Carlson (Merrill Carlson & Co., PLLC), Mac McIntosh (Degginger McIntosh & Associates, Inc.), Jason Webb (Bell-Anderson Agency, Inc.) and Todd Cepek (Nuprecon, LP). The success of the tournament was a direct result of their dedication to ABC and their fellow members. If you are interested in serving on the golf committee next year, please contact Victoria Klyce at (800) 640-7789. Mark VanWell of VanWell Masonry doesn’t do anything halfway. As soon as he was slated to take the chapter’s secretary-treasurer position, he met with outgoing S/T Diane Keithly (Keithly Electric Co.) and the ABC staff to get oriented. There is a lot to learn to do the job right, and Mark started off by drafting an annual work schedule so he could understand what needed to be done when. Mark now also chairs the Finance Committee and sits on the Governance Council, in addition to the Board of Directors. As a new director, he stepped up to his leadership responsibility and signed on as a Sustaining Member of the ABC National PAC at the Red Badge level. In addition, he sponsored a green at the ABC Golf Extravaganza. Thanks, Mark, for showing us all how to get involved and make a difference in a hurry.
