ABC congratulates Janelle R. Bruland, president and CEO of Management Services Northwest, Inc., Ferndale, for receiving the Small Business Administration’s State Small Business Person of the Year award for Washington State.
Management Services Northwest is a full-service facility management company serving the Northwest region since 1995, when it began providing commercial cleaning services to approximately 10 office buildings in Whatcom County.
Since then, it has grown from a small cleaning company into a regional facility management company providing services to more than 200 facilities in Washington and Oregon. Starting with 10 employees in 1995, the company’s growth has been phenomenal, and it has now grown to more than 180 team members, plus several subcontractors working throughout its service area.
Management Services Northwest has grown an average of 42 percent per year with revenue growth ranging from $863,000 in 2003 to a little less than $5,000,000 in 2008. It’s no wonder Management Services Northwest was recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of the Top 5000 fastest growing private companies in America and by the Puget Sound Business Journal as one of the fastest growing private companies in Washington state.
One of the challenges the company faced was being asked to continue servicing a client who had chosen to go with another competitor. The company’s loyalty paid off and the client later regretted the decision to go with a competitor. Management Services Northwest always gives 10 percent of contract profits to charities including the Whatcom County Pregnancy Center and others.

CHG Building Systems, Inc., has completed the four building, 26,000 square-foot Holgate Square on Airport Way and Hoglate Street just south of downtown Seattle. The complex, owned by Puget Properties, provides flexible industrial workspaces that can be divided into various sizes depending on the tenants needs.
Designed by Johnson Architecture & Planning, the buildings fit into the industrial character of the neighborhood. They feature natural light and large volumes of space and durable low-maintenance finishes. “The unfinished space is designed to be flexible and can be divided into various sizes,” said Steve Johnson, principal of Johnson Architecture & Planning. “We worked with CHG to customize the VP Buildings pre-engineered systems that are economical and appropriate for this use. We were able to incorporate the mezzanines, the large glazed roll up doors and create very useful industrial and business incubator spaces that can accommodate what each tenant needs.”
CHG provided the metal buildings and roof panels manufactured by VP Buildings and added upgraded architectural sheet metal exterior cladding. A variety of materials enhance the project’s appearance - exterior wall panels are Mini-V-Beam by AEP Span, and feature flat Century Wall insulated wall panels by Kingspan API at the storefront entries; Simple Saver insulation from Therm-All Insulation with a matt black vapor barrier, which is left exposed but can be covered by more traditional interior finishes. CHG designed and provided the canopies and sunscreens. CHG worked with Johnson and KPFF Engineers to develop a foundation/sub structure for the buildings.
The Color Store occupies the building at the corner of Airport Way and Holgate. There are several other tenants in negotiation for space but Puget Properties does not identify tenants until leases/sales are final. For more information on Holgate Square contact Jeff Richey at (206) 423-7631.
