April 28th was the night ABC of Western Washington celebrated the “best of the best” in the merit shop construction industry, awarding 11 Excellence in Construction Awards to deserving project teams. The revamped Awards Showcase took place at the Spirit of Washington Event Center and was a huge hit with those in attendance. Everyone mingled, snacked on appetizers and learned about the different projects from the winning teams themselves in a tradeshow-like format. One of the winning teams, Donovan Brothers, Inc., held a wine tasting at their booth. Synergy Construction, Inc. showed off their new tradeshow booth setup, and Dykstra Construction Services, LLC brought a model of the fantastic residence they built for the Cohenour family. ABC recently announced the release of its newly enhanced Employer Guide for Diversity and Inclusion, which provides guidance, direction, information and reference materials for members companies that are initiating or looking to improve a diversity program.

During the 60-day regular legislative session, the legislature considered more than 1,600 bills introduced this year and passed about 300 bills to the governor. The legislature was not able to agree on a supplemental operating budget before the end of the regular session to close a $2.8 billion gap between proposed spending and actual revenues for the remainder of the 2009-2011 biennium. Governor Gregoire called a special session to allow Democrats to negotiate an agreement on spending cuts and tax increases to close the gap.
