ARC FLASH: PROTECTION BEYOND PPE (06/11/2010)

Electrical safety has always been an important topic for EHS managers. Traditional approaches include Lockout Tagout, wearing appropriate PPE, and proper labeling and warnings. Arc flash is a very important part of electrical safety that has gained increased prominence with recent advances in our understanding of the phenomenon. As understanding of arc flash has advanced so too have techniques for personnel protection. These new methods go well beyond tradition approaches, and are starting to blur the line between EHS and plant engineering.

EHS managers are being called upon to evaluate, approve, and even budget for, systems that were once considered strictly electrical systems. These systems can now contain features that deliver arc flash protection. Arc resistant switchgear, maintenance switches, and arc flash containment devices are some examples.

This webinar will discuss causes of arc flash and some of the protection solutions that are now available, and will better equip EHS managers to make arc flash protection decisions that go beyond PPE.
