According to an analysis of the
report released Jan. 21 by the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), union membership in the U.S. private construction workforce reached its lowest point since BLS started tracking union data in 1973. In 2010, only 801,000 workers in the private construction industry belonged to a union.
From 2009 to 2010, union membership fell from 14.5 percent of the private construction workforce to only 13.1 percent, a loss of 157,000 members. In 2009, union membership was at its lowest since 1995, according to the Union Membership and Coverage Database.
