Our Crane Lift Director class is designed to be a component assisting the employer in determining if their personnel meet the requirements of the state regulatory requirements for a Lift Director.
Please note: It is NOT designed to be an entry level crane training program. Attendees must have been previously trained on Mobile Crane Operating and Inspection Rules and Regulations. It is NOT a Rigging and Signaling training program; note that some states may require the Lift Director be a Qualified Rigger and Qualified Signalperson.
Program includes a 74-page student workbook and taking a 66 question written knowledge check test demonstrating comprehension of key points/topics.
Students successfully completing the program will receive a Lift Director Training ID Card certifying completion of the training program along with a copy of the class sign in sheet and their written knowledge check results for employer training records retention.
Topics covered include:
- Sources of Laws and Regulations: Federal, State, ASME
- Craning Personnel Qualification Requirements and Responsibilities: Competent/qualified person, controlling entity, crane owner, user, workers, rigger, signalperson/spotter, operator, supervisor, A/D director
- Lift Director Qualification Requirements and Responsibilities: Preparing for a lift, assigning personnel, managing safety, directing the lift
- Crane Stability and Structural Ratings: Factors that affect ratings
- Crane Accidents and Hazards: Causes, identifying, overhead, underground, energized powerline clearance rules, weather/wind
- Pre-Planning Steps: Gaining area access, traffic, flagging, work area control, ground surface area support considerations, outriggers/stabilizers, cribbing, blocking, dunnage, matting
- Inspections: Crane, work area, records, operator aids and safety devices
- Lift Planning Steps: Lift types, planning form and documentation, personnel lifting
- Crane Operation: General operation, miscellaneous equipment, suspended loads, taglines/guide ropes, jib installation, determining load weight
- Review of Rigging Basics: Ratings, tagging, shackles, sling types and inspection, hitches, sling angles
- Review of Signaling/Spotting Basics: Personnel requirements, positioning, signals, chart requirements
- Review of Crane Rating Charts: Mobile Telescopic, Mobile Lattice, Tower, Fast Erect Tower
- Review of Lift Solution Steps: Wire rope line pull, load handling deductions, steps to calculate NET lift capacity
- Review of General Crane Terminology
- Sample Documentation: DOT weight tables, signaling charts, lift planning form, jib pre-install meeting checklist, jib post-install inspection checklist
Attending as an Employer's Lift Director:
- State Regulations: WA State 296-155 Part L requires a qualified Lift Director be on-site during all craning tasks. The rule also defines the Lift Directors Qualification requirements as well as all responsibilities. Note that WA State also requires the Lift Director be a “Qualified Rigger” and “Qualified Signalperson” which are separate from this program.
- Federal Regulations: 29CFR1926 subpart CC and ASME B30 volumes also define the same responsibilities as those of a Lift Director, but they may be performed by other qualified personnel as the term Lift Director is not utilized much in it. State codes which follow the Federal Regulation.
- ASME B30 Standards: They also define these same responsibilities as a Lift Director, but they may be performed by other qualified personnel as the term Lift Director is not utilized much in them.
