This 1-day Rigger and Signalperson course assists employers in meeting the current federal and selected state regulations for Qualified Person training, testing, and evaluation. This is NOT a national certification program.
The Rigging portion of the program covers risk management, general crane safety & hazards of operating cranes, rigging plans, the use and inspection criteria for master links, shackles, eyebolts, lifting eyes, slings, sling angles, hitches, spreader bars and equalizer beams, calculating load weight & and center of gravity. Additionally, the Signaling/Spotting portion of the program covers Qualified Signal Person requirements, power line safety, positioning, craning hazards, signal person requirements, and hand and verbal crane signaling, meanings, actions, and potential hazards they may cause.
Students successfully completing the program will receive copies of all testing and evaluation documentation and a proof of training ID card.
Topics Include:
- Responsibilities and Duties
- Hazards of working around cranes (required per OSHA/WAC)
- General Crane Dynamics (required per OSHA/WAC)
- Load weight calculating (required by OSHA/WAC)
- Load COG and leg load calculations (required by OSHA/WAC)
- Review of sources for regulatory laws and rules
- Rigging Plan, steps, types of lifts
- Hardware, shackles, eyebolts, links, (use and inspection/rejection)
- Hardware angle loading, rating reductions
- Slings, hitch types, sling angles, material types (use/ inspection/rejection criteria)
- Horizontal Sling angle loading, additional stress
- Tagging and marking requirements
- Chain Falls and Lever Hoists
- Using spreader beams or equalizer bars
- Good and bad practices
- Voice and hand signaling and spotting
- Hazards applicable to each crane signal
Federal and state regulations require employers to ensure that persons who rig and signal/spot for cranes covered by the construction codes are “qualified riggers” and “qualified signalpersons”. Documentation of this qualification must be provided upon request and training records must be maintained by the employer. Some states mandate this qualification is valid for 60 months. Our program includes professional classroom instruction, student workbooks, written knowledge checks verifying comprehension, fundamental practical hands-on workshop scenario demonstrations, proof of training ID card (valid for 60 months), copies of all training and evaluation documents for employer record retention.
Participants must be able to read and understand English, as well comprehend basic math, and use a calculator.

Substitutions are permitted.
No-shows and late cancellations will be billed for the full amount.
